School for a Village kicked off 2026 by working with Gitothua Secondary School to donate some 11 computers for their students! This donation aims to address the school’s top priority need: functional computers. The project was led by School for a Village Project Manager Leah Karienye.

Gitothua Secondary School

Leah first visited Gitothua Secondary School in November of 2025 to discuss a potential partnership with S4V and to identify exactly which areas of the school needed support. It was at this visit that the school’s administration confirmed that their top priority need is functional computers, as they only possessed four prior to the donation. It was also in these discussions that the team learned that the estimated computer literacy rate among students is 30–40%.

Gitothua Secondary School, located about 16 miles, or 26 kilometres, from Nairobi, is a mixed, secondary day school. There are currently around 246 girls and 200 boys, totalling approximately 446  students, with about 45 students per class. At full capacity, the school can hold around 640 students.

Over the last two years, the school has expanded its curriculum to include Computer Studies and Home Science, further emphasizing the students’ need for more functional computers. Additionally, both subjects sat their first KCSE examinations in 2025.

Computer Donation

The first step our project managers took in the computer donation process was to source and ensure that each computer was in good working condition and was equipped with the necessary educational software.

Afterwards, the computers were delivered to the school, where our project managers set them up in the institution’s computer lab and did one final check to make sure they all worked properly.

Student Projects

During the Projects team’s first visit to Gitothua Secondary School, they met two students in the school’s computer lab. They noticed that the computer the students were using was old and slow, adding a layer of unnecessary difficulty and time.

The students were preparing their project for the county-level competition scheduled for the following day. The project focused on agriculture, more specifically, on finding an accessible alternative for professional soil testing—a procedure that has been made inaccessible for small-holder farmers due to high costs and centralized laboratory services.

They also presented other projects they developed for the sub-county level science fair that did not advance to the county level.

Additionally, the students not only shared their projects with the team but also expressed some of the difficulties they faced: limited access to research materials and the inability to incorporate certain technical aspects because of the lack of adequate computer resources.

Looking Towards the Future…

The students showed great excitement about the new computers, expressing that the donation will work to empower their research and improve their future projects.

We hope that this donation can further stoke the enthusiasm Gitothua Secondary School’s students have for innovation and technology, and we hope that their desire to develop solutions to real problems in their community never ceases.

Thank you again to our Project Manager Leah, and thank you to Gitothua Secondary School’s students and administration!
